About ISBS

The International Society for Biopharmaceutical Statistics (ISBS) is an international statistical organization registered in United States. Its primary mission is to organize annual symposiums in order to provide an international forum for statisticians all over the world to share and exchange information, experiences, research findings, as well as challenges, and to improve and promote international unification and standardization of statistical practice in the biopharmaceutical industry. With the growing globalization of the biopharmaceutical market, outsourcing of clinical trials to different regions or countries, and ever increasing employment of international multi-center trials, the need for such an international event is pressing.

The ISBS will organize an annual summer symposium in different countries or regions. The First Annual Symposium will take place on June 30 - July 2, 2008 in Shanghai, China. The second symposium will be in the United States. The theme of the first annual symposium is the roles of statistics in biopharmaceutical globalization. To learn more about the first annual symposium or to register or submit an abstract, click the Symposiums button.

The symposiums will cover a wide range of statistical research topics at different development stages of biopharmaceutical products including drugs, biologics, medical devices, and biotechnological products. Specifically, the areas covered are

  • Pre-clinical discovery
  • Pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics (PK/PD)
  • Early development and experimental medicine
  • Chemistry, manufacturing and control (CMC)
  • Clinical development (clinical trials)
  • Post-licensure safety monitoring and pharmacovigilance
  • Pharmacoepidemiology
  • Pharmacoeconomics and outcome research
  • Pharmacogenomics, Pharmacogenetics and System Biology
  • Regulatory sciences and statistics
  • Globalization and outsourcing
  • Regulatory issues on traditional (herbal) medicine
  • Innovative statistical programming, computation, and simulation
  • Information and statistical consulting

The symposiums will include a 3-day conference to be preceded by 2-days of short courses. The short courses will cover emerging and challenging issues or topics in biopharmaceutical research, development, and regulation. There will be keynote speeches on the main theme of each symposium and invited and contributed presentations representing a variety of research areas. Parallel sessions will be arranged based on the topics submitted by the participants.

All statisticians and related professionals who are involved in quantitative bio-pharmaceutical research, development and regulation are encouraged to attend the conference. It is not required for attendees to give a presentation at the conference, however, they are encouraged to submit and share their research findings at the symposiums. Presenters will also be encouraged to submit their papers for possible publication (after being peer reviewed) in a special issue of a statistical journal.
